Aspalta was chosen as king of Kush

Kushite royal inscriptions

Selection of Aspalta as king of Kush, around 600 BC.

Now all his majesty's army is present in the city called Neta, in which Didon sits, presiding over the wats, a god---who is at the same time the god of Kush---after the death of the goshawk [Enli-Amun] on his throne. Now, the trusted commanders among His Majesty's army were six men, while the trusted commanders and watchmen of the castles were six men.... Then they said to the whole army, Come, let us make our master appear, for we are like flocks without a shepherd! Then the army became concerned and said, "Our master is here with us, but we do not know him! If we knew him, we would obey him and work for him, just as At-Tiwi works to serve Horus, the son of Isis, after he sits on the throne of his father Osiris! Let us show honor and thanks to his crown." Then his majesty's army said, and they all said with one voice, "There is still the god Amun-Ra, the lord of Tegan-at-teo, who lives in Napata. He is also the god of Kush. Come, let us go to him. We can do nothing without him, but good luck comes from him. He is the god of the kings of Kush from the time of Ra. It is he who will guide us. In his hands is the kingship of Kush, which he will give to his beloved son...

Accordingly, His Majesty's leaders and officials in the palace went to the Temple of Amun. They found the prophets and high priests waiting for them outside the temple. They said to them, “Pray that this god, Amun Ra, who lives in Napata, will come to grant us a master over us, to revive us, to build temples to all the gods and goddesses of Kemet (the Black Earth, that is, Egypt), and to offer them sacred offerings! We cannot do anything without this god, for he is the one who guides us. Then the prophets and high priests entered the temple, so that they could perform all the rituals of purification and incense to him. After that, His Majesty’s leaders and the officials in the palace entered the temple and fell on their stomachs before the god. They said, “We have come to you, O Amun-Ra, O lord of Tegan-at-Tiwi, who lives in Napata, so that you may give us a master, so that he may revive us, build temples to the gods of Kemet and Rekhty, and to offer sacred sacrifices. This honorable position is in your hands...won’t you give it to your son whom you love?”

Then they brought the king's brothers before this god, but he did not take any of them. For the second time the king's brother, the son of Amun, and the child of Mut, the Lady of the Heavens, the son of Ra, presented Aspalta, may he live forever. Then this god, Amun-Ra, lord of Tijan-at-Tiwi, said, “He is your king. He is the one who will revive you. He is the one who will build every temple of Kumat and Rakhti. He is the one who will make sacrifices to her. His father was a son of mine, the son of Ra, Enli-Amun, rejoicing in victory. His mother is the king’s sister, the royal mother, Kandaka Kush, and the daughter of Ra, Nensla. May she live always, he is your master.”
